Ka Papa Loʻi O Kānewai offered the opportunity for us students to learn about traditional Hawaiian agricultural practices of the loʻi and their importance in Hawaiian culture. We first gathered to hear about the legends of Kāne and Kanaloa and their significance to the source of life (water) for agriculture. Our guides lined us up to journey through the forest path alongside the Manōa stream to examine the topography and water partitioning techniques used to create the loʻi and listen to the history. We had fun collecting the leaves for fertilizer, stomping our way through the mud, and weeding the lo‘i. After a morning of hard work, we were pleasantly greeted to lunch with kalua pork, sweet pudding, and kalo.
