After traveling up a long and incredibly windy road, we reached the trailhead to Palehua-Palikea!
We were very fortunate to have Cliff Morden tag along, who is a botany Professor and Director of the School of Life Sciences at UH Mānoa. As we headed up to our turn-around point, Dr.Morden pointed out numerous invasive and endemic species to the islands. The trail, though difficult at times, was relatively easy and pretty much well-maintained. What was incredibly interesting was being able to physically observe the gradient of invasive species at lower altitudes and more native species as you got higher. Some of the pictures below include ʻOhiʻa lehua, maile, and koa wood, which are incredibly important to Hawaiian culture and biodiversity. Overall, the hike was incredibly rewarding and knowledge-packed.
